This is a course about European economic integration. It combines economic analysis of integration with an understanding of the integration methods that are employed in the European Union. The course will cover the main theoretical issues related to common markets, single currency areas, integration and competition.
The objective is to master the economic essence of regulatory methodology, of policy decisions at EU level and of the main concepts of economic integration as practised in the European Union. These essentials will be outlined, thereby details and legal technicalities be avoided, so that the economic logic and impact can be understood. In doing so the course will discuss recent developments such as the BREXIT and/or the formation and potential pitfalls of the European monetary union.
